Syrah has become a powerful varietal for BC winegrowers, both in terms of its success in growing well in the south Okanagan, and for what it has been delivering in the glass. Estate grown on our Perfect Hedge vineyard in Osoyoos, and blended with fruit from the acclaimed SunRock site, the style is inspired by Cote Rotie in Northern Rhone, blending 96% Syrah with 4% Viognier. This classic technique gives the nose a slight floral lift and softens the pepper note ever so slightly.
With it’s pretty blue violet colour core and raspberry rim, this wine draws you in. The nose is reminiscent of blackberry brambles and warm clove. This plush wine has a charcuterie quality on the palette and supple tannin. This wine can easily be tucked away in the cellar for 5-7 years
INSIDER TIP - 22% of this wine is not just aged, but also fermented in French oak puncheons, which imparts silky tannins and a lush roundness to the Syrah.
The Syrah was fermented in two separate lots: 1 lot co-fermented with Viognier in stainless steel fermenters and another lot was fermented in 500 L open top French oak puncheons and stainless steel tanks. All the fermentation happened as whole berries. After pressing, the wine was barrel aged for 18 months in 42% new French oak.
The 2017 brought some wild weather. One of the coldest winters we’ve experienced in years gave way to a cool, wet spring. Although there was flooding in the Okanagan, it was followed by 54 straight days with no rain. The hot dry summer allowed fruit development to catch up from its late start and created smaller more concentrated grapes. Fall weather cooled down quickly, but we were able to bring in our fruit prior to any risk of frost. Overall, expect ripeness and weight to the wines, while still retaining bright fruit flavours.
